Shevington Sharks U9s 24 - Blackbrook Royals U9s 12 - 18th May 2008.
Captained by Jack Brogan the Sharks played very well against the Royals.
Defending hard and showing flair in attack the Sharks led from the Start. A second to none defensive effort held the Royals out several times and straight drive up the pitch followed by the ball being moved out wide by the stand off or quick runs from the acting half backs rewarded the sharks.
Try Scorers Tom Darbyshire (2), George Bridge, Brandon Earlam, Joshua Taberner and Kevin Brown.
Shevington Sharks U9s 12 - Chorley Panthers U9s 24 - 18th May 2008.
Captained by Conor Sheehan-Jones the Sharks struggled in the first half against the Panthers. The Sharks just could not get going in defence and made it easy for the panthers to run through. Half time Score Sharks 4 - Panthers 20.
A much better second half form the Sharks although it was not enough to turn the game around and the Sharks were better by a more consistent Panther outfit.
Try Scorers Kevin Brown (2) and Jack Brogan.

SHEVINGTON SHARKS U9’S 34 SADDLEWORTH RANGERS U9’S 4 - 20th April 2008.
Captained by George Bridge this was another fantastic team spirited display both in defence and attack . The coaching message before this game was a real challenge for the defence "if we can stop a team scoring then we can't lose".
This week we used the game to give a few players the opportunity to try out some different roles and positions in readiness for Scarborough and next season. Tom Gray, Kevin Brown and Brandon Earlam had a go at calling the runs and Josh Caldwell, George Bridge and Jack Brogan were asked to move into the middle to try their hand at being forwards while Tom Darbyshire and Arron Molyneux spent some time on the wings.
Man of the Match Conor Sheehan-Jones took the ball on the first drive, and used his blistering pace to outpace the Saddleworth defence in a race to the corner.
After holding out Saddleworth on the first five tackles of the next set a brief lapse of concentration in the defensive line coupled with players being our of position allowed the Saddleworth player to run in on the corner although he was chased all the way by Josh Caldwell. Tom Gray was pushed in touch just short of the try line, but the Sharks defence held Saddleworth in their own half. On the next set Saddleworth were unable to hold out a determined run by Alex Calland, who once again demonstrated his willingness to knock over defenders to get to the try line. Kevin Brown took the ball and ran straight through the Saddleworth defence, and with Brandon Earlam on his shoulder he brushed aside three Saddleworth defenders to take the score. 3-1 to Shevington. Conor Sheehan-Jones, Tom Darbyshire, Jack Brogan, Brandon Earlam and Top Tackler Liam Fowler led the Shark's defensive line by example, and worked hard to force handling errors which were pounced on by their alert team mates. The Sharks next try came from a long break by Coaches Award Winner Jack Brogan, in which he demonstrated the hand off he learnt this week, it's possible he may have slowed down just enough so he could try it again! Josh Chadwick playing in the front row stayed on his feet and continued to drive the ball forward making some extra yards and drawing defenders into the tackle, after which Josh Taberner ran through two tacklers and wrestled the ball and a defender over the line to score a powerful try in the corner, taking the score to 5-1. On the Shark's next attack, Tom Darbyshire went the length of the field to be dragged down inches short of the line. On the next tackle, following a short debate and change of Acting Half Back, Arron Molyneux scooted in to score through a tiny gap to put the ball down in the corner. Half time score Shevington 6 Saddleworth Rangers 1.
In the second half, after holding Saddleworth's attack just short of the line, Chris King raced up field towards the corner only to be tackled a few steps from scoring, George Bridge tried to crash through but was also held up short and on the now famous "that's not how we pass" 3rd tackle Chris King took the ball and dove towards the line and planted the ball down on the whitewash. The best move of the game started after a crunching tackle by Liam Fowler forced a handling error eagerly pounced on by Tom Gray. Liam Fowler took the next drive leaving players on the floor in his wake. An excellent passing move along the line ended with Tom Gray making a well timed, but according to the referee, forward pass to Jack Brogan. (Ref - Quote Miles Forward Unquote). Jack Brogan made up for the missed opportunity by forcing a handling error and Arron Molyneux quickly regained the ball. With Alex at Acting Half back and Liam Fowler at Stand Off the ball was passed out to Spectators Award Winner Brandon Earlam, who dummied and ran through to score. The Sharks penultimate attack was started by Tom Darbyshire who made another almost length of the field break, only to be tackled just short of the line for the second time. On the third tackle Tom Darbyshire picked the ball up for a scoot and pass move, only to see a huge gap on the outside of the defence which he quickly made the most of and scooted all of the way into the corner. The Sharks final attack finished were it all began, with Conor Sheehan-Jones making a belated attempt for a winger's shirt. A quick hand off left in open space and he out-paced the Saddleworth defence to the top corner to score his second long range effort of the day. Saddleworth's final attack was stopped with another crunching tackle by Jack Brogan and Josh Caldwell forcing the Saddleworth winger into touch.

SHEVINGTON SHARKS U9 40 - CULCHETH EAGLES U9 12 - 6th April 2008.
Conor Sheehan-Jones opened the scoring for the Sharks with a further two tries from the Shark's forwards, Spectators Award Winner Alex Calland and Chris King. The Eagles, assisted by Tom Gray, managed to break through the Shark's defence to score but a further tries came from Alex Calland and Oliver Doran. A great break from George Bridge with an off load to Jack Brogan allowed him to open up around the Eagle's defence to take the half time score to Sharks 24 - Eagles 4.
The Eagles, ably supported by Man of the Match Kevin Brown and Alex Calland, scored early in the second half. Sharks soon responded with a try from Coaches Award Winner Dmya Hanley. Further tries were then added by Liam Fowler, Kevin Brown, and Josh Taberner.
Shevington Sharks U9s 34 - Westhoughton Lions U9s 4 - 16th March 2008.
Captained by Coaches Award Winner Kevin Brown the Sharks performed well and also proved they are a very "Team Spirited Side" by lending a total of 8 players to Weshoughton.
The Sharks started well with Coaches Award Winner Kevin Brown opening up the scoring for the Sharks. Defending well the Sharks held out the Lions and a quick break up the field by Josh Chadwick and a fine off load allowed Tom Darbyshire to score. Good drives down the field by the Lions put Liam Fowler (playing for the Lions) in a scoring position to get one back for the Lions. Good defence from Spectators Award Winner Chris King, George Bridge and Brandon Earlam held the Lions out and fast play the ball with good ball distribution allowed Josh Caldwell, Kevin Brown and Tom Darbyshire (2) to score. Half time score Sharks 24 - Lions 4.
From the start of the second half the Sharks, led by Man of the Match Liam Fowler in Defence, put on a fine display of tackling. Although the Lions came very close to scoring several times the Shark managed to keep a clean sheet. Strong running back at the Lions defence was rewarded with tries from Jack Brogan, Alex Calland, Chris King and another two from Tom Darbyshire.
The game was good to watch and both teams thoroughly enjoyed the spirit in which it was played and the winners at the end of the day were the 21 players! Well done to both teams.
A special well done to the eight Sharks that played for Westhoughton and also to Chris King and Josh Caldwell on scoring their first try.
Man of the Match Liam Fowler, Spectators Award Winner Chris King and Coaches Award Winners Tom Darbyshire and Kevin Brown . Tries Tom Darbyshire (5), Kevin Brown (2), Jack Brogan, Alex Calland, Liam Fowler, Josh Caldwell and Chris King.
SHEVINGTON SHARKS U9s 20 - PILKINGTON RECS U9s 20 - 9th March 2008.
Captained by Brandon Earlam this was another close encounter but the Sharks dug deep in defence and ensured Pilks did not grab a try in the final minutes.
Coaches Award winner Kevin Brown scored one in both halves and Spectators Award winner Oliver Doran powered through for one but it was good ball distribution by Man of the Match Tom Darbyshire that put Tom Gray and George Bridge in for one each.
SHEVINGTON SHARKS U9s 20 - LANGWORTHY REDS U9s 8 - 2nd March 2008.
Captained by Spectators Award Winner Chris King the Sharks performed well both in defence and attack.
From the off the Sharks drove hard at the Reds and three drives up the field by Joshua Taberner, Chris King and Conor Sheehan-Jones put the Reds defence on a back foot and Kevin Brown took the ball across a scrambling Reds defence to get the ball down in the corner and open up the scoring. A stirling display in defence throughout both halves by all the team made it difficult for the reds to gain much ground. Drives back down the field by Alex Calland, Josh Caldwell, Tom Gray and Oliver Doran put the Sharks close to the Reds line and quick thinking by Arron Molyneux allowed him scoot and nip passed a slow defender to get the ball down. Again cover tackles from Jack Brogan and George Bridge stopped the Reds attack and a big set of drives by Coaches Award Winner Josh Caldwell, Tom Darbyshire and Man of the Match Brandon Earlam moved the Sharks back down the field. Good ball distribution from Arron Molyneux and a well timed pass by Tom Darbyshire allowed Oliver Doran to throw the dummy, step off the opposite foot and pass easily through the defence to score. The Reds came back at the Sharks on the last set of six before the break and although good tackling from Josh Chadwick and Tom Gary the Reds were rewarded with a close in try. Half time Score Sharks 12 - Reds 4.
A quick try straight from the break by the Reds was not the best of starts for the Sharks, however Drives up the field by Kevin Brown, Joshua Taberner and good ball distribution by Tom Darbyshire and Oliver Doran put the ball in the hands of Brandon Earlam who pushed through the defence and side stepped the full back to get the ball down. From this point on the Sharks defended very well and all players in the team did their bit. Not one play was slacking in defence and there was a fantastic display in attack with several off loads and strings of passing. In the final minutes drives from Josh Chadwick and Alex Calland put the Sharks over the half way line and a quick play the ball and pass from Arron Molyneux out to Oliver Doran who passed on to Tom Darbyshire started the move up the field for the final try. Tom Darbyshire broke through but as the Reds defence slid across the field Josh Taberner was supporting on the outside and a floating pass from Tom Darbyshire into Joshua Taberner's hands allowed him to push through to score the final try of the match. Sharks 20 - Reds 8.
A fantastic game and it was good to see all the players giving 100% in defence and also it was good to see Jack Brogan and Kevin Brown retuning to form.
Man of the Match Brandon Earlam, Spectators Award Winner Chris King and Coaches Award Winner Josh Caldwell. Tries Kevin Brown, Arron Molyneux, Oliver Doran, Brandon Earlam and Joshua Taberner. Top Tacklers with 14 each Brandon Earlam, Chris King and Tom Gray.
SHEVINGTON SHARKS U9’S 40- ST CUTHBERTS U9’S 32 - 24th Feb 2008.
A tremendous game that was evenly contested throughout but the Sharks came away with the Victory.
Captained by Man of the Match Tom Darbyshire the Sharks let Cuthberts in on the left wing for an easy try during the first set of six. Confident drives up the pitch by Josh Caldwell and Conor Sheehan-Jones allowed Tom Darbyshire to break through to score near the wing. The Sharks defended well especially Chris King and the ball was turned over near the sharks line. Another wave of determined runs allowed Oliver Doran to pass out to Brandon Earlam who ran through and off loaded in the tackle to Tom Darbyshire who dived over for his second. Again St Cuthberts ran the ball out wide and slipped passed our flanks to level the score. A solid drive from Dyma Hanley made ground up the field and a powerful long range run by Joshua Taberner followed by a neat off load into the safe hands of Tom Gray pushed the Sharks out in front. disappointingly Cuthberts exploited the wings and levelled the scores but Oliver Doran took the ball from the restart and barged straight through Cuthberts defence to score under the sticks (if we had them). However Cuthberts replayed Oliver Dorans try at their restart and levelled the scores. The last try was another long range run from the restart by Joshua Taberner and by sheer grit and determination he fended of the St Cuthberts defence and drove the ball down to take the Sharks into the lead at half time. Sharks 20 - St Cuthberts 16.
The second half defending started well with more hard tackles form Chris King and Liam Fowler. The ball was handed over by both teams before Spectators Choice Alex Calland drove through from 5m out to score his first ever try for the Sharks. A loaned Shark to St Cuthberts, in the form of Tom Gray, took the ball and fended of several of his team mates to close the gap. A strong run from Arron Molyneux and a superb one handed off load out to George Bridge who then fended off two further tackles to go over in the corner. Unfortunately for the Sharks Cuthberts attacked the flanks and although a good effort was made by George Bridge, Conor Sheehan-Jones and Tom Darbyshire, Cuthberts managed to pull one back by going over in the corner. Strong drives back at the defence by Alex Calland, Brandon Earlam and Josh Caldwell put the Sharks near the line and Tom Darbyshire ran straight through score his third. However fast play the ball by St Cuthberts broke the Sharks defence and even with scrambling defensive attempts and a long range cover tackle by Coaches Award Winner Oliver Doran it was not enough to stop Cuthberts scoring. The Sharks rallied and drives back up the pitch by Dmya Hanley and Alex Calland allowed Liam Fowler to power his way through the St Cuthberts defence and drive the ball down on the line. Good cover tackling form Arron Molyneux and George Bridge put St Cuthberts in touch and a strong run by Brandon Earlam and another superb off load to George Bridge allowed George to out pace the St Cuthberts defence to score another long range try in the corner. With seconds on the clock and the referee on his knees, Tom Gray (still playing for St Cuthberts) powered his way through the Sharks to give St Cuthberts a well deserved try. Final Score Sharks 40 - St Cuthberts 32. A special mention to Tom Gray and Alex Calland for playing a half each for St Cuthberts. Tom Gray scored a hat-rick - 1 for the Sharks and 2 for St Cuthberts and Alex Calland was very close to scoring in both halves.
The attacking play and passing from the Sharks was very pleasing and at least four tries were scored from safe and considered off loads. Brandon Earlam off loaded twice to put over George Bridge and Tom Darbyshire. Well Done! Slightly disappointing was the defence which allowed at least four easy tries to be scored.
Man of the Match Tom Darbyshire, Spectators Choice Alex Calland and Coaches Award Winner Oliver Doran. Tries from Tom Darbyshire (3), Tom Gray (3), George Bridge (2) Liam Fowler, Alex Calland, Oliver Doran and Joshua Taberner. Join Top Tacklers Chris King and Liam Fowler 12 each.
SHEVINGTON SHARKS U9’S 36 NEWTON STORM U9’S 16 - 17th Feb 2008.
As expected this was another fantastic display of rugby from both the Sharks and Newton Storm.
Captained by Arron Molyneux the first half was an even contest with Storm opening the scores after they broke through to go over in the corner. Taking the ball back at Newton's defence a strong drive from Joshua Taberner followed by a quick play the ball allowed Spectators Choice Jack Brogan to hand off the defence and dive over in the corner to level the scores. Defending well the Sharks held out Newton's attack and taking the ball back up the field Liam Fowler drifted sideways, picked a gap and broke the tackle to take the Sharks into the lead. Good tackling from Chris King and Alex Calland again stopped Storm from closing the gap and a quick scoot by Tom Darbyshire was off loaded to Man of the Match Tom Gray which allowed him to score his first try. Newton's number 8 drove hard at the Shark's defence and his efforts were rewarded with a try. Another looping pass from Tom Darbyshire allowed Jack Brogan to open up across Storm's defence to put the ball down again in the corner. Newton Strom drove back at the Shark's defence and a fast play the ball was too much for the Shark's defence and Newton went over. Half time score the Sharks 16 - Storm 12.
It was good to see that at half time the young Sharks players analysed their performance and realised that the key to winning this game was to tackle around the legs to stop the Newton forwards driving through and they went back out and tackled impeccably during the second half.
From the off two quick drives down the field by Alex Calland and Josh Chadwick opened up the defence for Star Man Tom Gray to slide through and score his second try. Newton replied but a loose ball was gathered by Liam Fowler and a quick play the ball followed by a floating pass by Arron Molyneux into the safe hands of Brandon Earlam allowed Brandon to score a long range try after breaking through three tackles. Storm pressurised the Shark's defensive line but good cover tackles from Coaches Award Winner George Bridge and Jack Brogan stopped Newton's attack. Taking the ball, Tom Gray ran through two tackles to score his third try in the corner. Still celebrating from the earlier try, the Sharks defence was caught on a back foot and Newton 'stormed' up the field to score a close range try. Jack Brogan took the ball from the restart and drove up the field but was tackled early. From a quick play the ball, Tom Darbyshire ran back across the broken defensive line and jinked through to score. The Sharks absorbed the next attack from Newton Storm and on the return attack Tom Darbyshire scooted from acting half back and put the ball in Tom Gray's hands and using his 'big hand off', Tom Gray pushed through Newton's defence and drove the ball down for his fourth try of the match. The final score was Sharks 36 - Newton Storm 16.

SHEVINGTON SHARKS U9S 28 LEIGH MINERS RANGERS U9S 28 - 10th Feb 2008.
A very heavy game under foot in which both teams had to dig deep both in defence and attack.
Leigh Miners and Rangers (LMR) started the match but a determined Sharks kept them out on the first set of six. Taking the ball back up hill at the LMR defence was hard going and the Sharks could not break the defensive line. With the down hill advantage LMR opened the score and using the same tactic managed to get in for a second. Hard running back up the pitch by the Sharks forwards allowed Kevin Brown to drive through and open the scoring for the Sharks. Fast play the ball from the LMR proved to much for the Sharks and they managed to get in on the fifth. Again the ball was taken back at the LMR defence and strong drives from Man of the Match Liam Fowler allowed Oliver Doran to dive over the line to take the half time score Sharks 8 - LMR 12.
Leading from the front Captain Conor Sheehan-Jones drove the ball down the field and Coaches Award Winner Arron Molyneux side stepped the LMR defence and drove the ball down over the line to equal the scores. Stirling defence from the Sharks held out LMR and taking the ball back at them Liam Fowler powered through to take the Sharks out in front. The remainder of the match would see LMR score then the Sharks and it would be back and forth up and down the pitch. Spectators Award Winner Tom Darbyshire scored two well crafted tries and a trade mark long range run from Jack Brogan ensured the Score remained even until the final whistle. The final score Sharks 28 - LMR 28.
A very good game in which both teams were strong in both defence and attack. It was heavy under foot and the Sharks benefited from the down hill advantage in the second half.

SHEVINGTON SHARKS U9S 28 LATCHFORD ALBION U9S 12 - 3rd Feb 2008.
What a fantastic game. The fixture was reversed and the Sharks travelled to Warrington to more firm ground! The sharks were solid in defence which stopped Latchfords attack and proved to be the deciding factor.
Spectators Award Winner Joshua Taberner opened the score within the first set of six with a powerful run through the defence. Latchford fought back but were held out for three sets of six before they managed to scoot in on the fifth tackle to level the score. In the final seconds of the first half Joshua Taberner again managed to power his way through the defence to take the Sharks into the lead. Shark 8 Albion 4.
Within the first set of six Liam Fowler managed to dice through the Albion's defence to get the ball down on the line. Albion replied and caught the Sharks on the back foot and scored in the corner. Taking the ball back at Latchford, Coaches Award Winner Tom Gray drove through and scored. Man of the Match Tom Darbyshire got the ball back for the sharks by a superb tackle that put Albion in touch. Liam Fowler took the ball back at the Albion's Defence and a determined run was rewarded with his second try. Albion replied and and brought the score to 20 - 12 but Joshua Taberner powered through for his hat-trick. In the final minutes an off load from Arron Molyneux gave Jack Brogan the space to open up and run around the defence to take the final score to Sharks 28 - Albion 12.
Another fantastic whole team effort, everyone is playing for each other which is good to see. Well Done. Well done Dyma Hanley on your Debut.

SHEVINGTON SHARKS U9s 28 – NEWTON STORM U9s 12 - 27th Jan 2008.
Our thanks must go to the Newton Storm coaches, players and parents as a Newton Storm side that hadn’t played or trained since before Christmas were today’s surprise visitors following the cancellation of the scheduled fixture against Accrington.
In a game that was a shining example to good behaviour and sportsmanship both teams played without their coaches, while the Sharks blooded two of their new players, Alex Calland and Josh Chadwick, in their 14 man squad.
The coaches and team have worked hard over the past few training sessions on the defensive line, and this hard work was the main difference between the two sides. In the first set the Sharks’ defence held Newton out and the attack moved the ball quickly down the field with Tom Derbyshire unlucky not score following a scoot on the last tackle. Both team’s second set followed the same pattern, only this time Tom D managed to jink his way through the Newton defence to score his first try of the day.
Once again solid defensive work by Oliver Doran, Josh Caldwell and George Bridge held Newton out and this time some strong drives led to Conor Sheehan Jones making a long break, reaching over to firmly plant the ball down over the try line.
Newton once again drove the ball up the field but solid defensive line work by the entire team held them out for all six tackles. Alex drove for the line, but was held up short and on the next play Arron Molyneux passed to Tom D he cut back to the right and used his acceleration to race around the outside of the defence and beat the defenders to the corner to take the Sharks into a 12-0 lead.
The first round of substitutions brought a little more physique to the Sharks attack, and the big front three Tom Gray, Josh Taberner and Liam Fowler made their presence felt with Liam twice being stopped on the line by large numbers of Newton defenders. A couple of injuries to Chris King and Josh T disrupted the team a little and, after all of hard work in the first quarter of an hour, it was a little disappointing to see Newton sneak a try in the corner after too many Sharks defenders were drawn into the tackle, and a simple offload allowed them in to score.
The balance was restored just before half time when Jack Brogan (spectator’s award winner) found a gap between the Newton centre and winger and outpaced the entire Newton team in a foot-race to score in the corner.
Half-time Sharks 16-4 Newton.
Not for the first time the Sharks started the second half a little slowly and allowed Newton in to score.
After this early lapse both the attack and defence worked very hard, Josh Chadwick involved himself in defence and a number of more experienced players Chris, Josh Caldwell, George and Brandon all put in particularly impressive “team” performances, making good one-on-one tackles and taking the hard early drives. It was this hard work that set up Oliver, who was unlucky to have been deemed to have bounced the ball over the line. However, the score didn’t stay at 16-8 for long as Tom D scored in the corner to complete his hat-trick.
After being admirably covered by George on the right wing who picked up the MoM award for his strong tackling performance, Newton Storms’ fast winger made a break across to the opposite wing and finding players out of position she managed to elude Josh T despairing clutches to score a very well deserved try.
The Shark’s next try came following a long break by the “big man” Tom Gray, and his burst through the centre of the Storm defence and quick play the ball allowed Josh T to race the last 10M and, not to be outdone by Conor, stretch over to score.
The Shark’s final try came when Newton paid the price for a risky pass on the first tackle, when Liam “the poacher” intercepted the ball and dove over the line to score.
With the score at 28-12 both defences dominated the last few sets of the game, and the game ended on a Josh Chadwick drive up the touchline.
Final score: Shevington Sharks 28-12 Newton Storm.
There were a lot of positives that the team can take away from today’s match – the improvements in the defensive line, some intelligent calls by both of the half backs and players, Alex and Josh Chadwick’s debuts, and some excellent tackling by all of the team.
There were no “stand-out” performances in the tackling front as the workload was shared out between all of the team, however the top six tacklers were – Liam 18, Jack 16, Chris 13, George 11, Brandon and Oliver 10, and everyone else managed more than five tackles.
Shevington Sharks U9's - Clock Face U9's - 25th Nov 2007.
Never a side to make things easy for themselves, the Sharks once again conceded a try on Clock Face’s first attack. A looping run around the Shark’s left wing found acres of empty space, and even a last ditch attempted tackle by Oliver Doran couldn’t prevent this. This wasespecially disappointing after all of the work that had taken place this week on the defensive line.
Both sides knocked-on, before the Sharks twice came close to scoring when George Bridge was held out, and an offload to Josh Taberner from Tom Gray on the last tackle also ended up just short. Good defence by today’s top tackler Liam Fowler (20 tackles) and Man of the Match Tom Gray (19 tackles) forced Clock Face into another mistake near to their line, and on the next set Chris King and Josh Caldwell were both held back before Arron Molyneux scooted over to score from close in. The rest of the first half was a mixture of good defence from both sides, interrupted by a lot of handling errors (as fingers started to get cold). On the last set of the first half, an off-side decision and a penalty allowed Clock Face to pressurise the Sharks line, and despite their best efforts the defence were unfortunate to concede a last minute try following a jinking run from close in. Half-time score Clock Face 2-1 Sharks.
While the defensive performance of both teams was impressive in the first half, the Shark’s second half defensive effort was even better – and it was this that eventually won the game.
Once again solid defence from both Joshes, Conor Sheehan-Jones, George, and Chris King forced Clock Face into making an error, and two drives up field allowed Tom Gray to use his strength to force his way through the defensive line to score. The next few sets followed the same story, with good defence either holding Clock Face out for the full set of tackles or forcing them into handling errors. Good field position allowed Arron the opportunity to offload to Tom Derbyshire, who cut back inside to score in the corner. On the next attack Kevin Brown made a strong run from halfway, and he was unfortunate to bounce the ball over the try line. With the score at 2-3, and not long to go, the Sharks found themselves defending their line, and only a superb last ditch tackle by Oliver Doran and Liam Fowler managed to keep Clock Face out. On the final set of the day, Josh Taberner, Kevin Brown, and Chris King moved the Sharks up the field and on the final tackle Oliver Doran scooted over to score. Final score Clock Face 2-4 Sharks.
Overall it was a greatly improved defensive performance, only spoiled slightly by the number of unforced handling errors and penalties.
Team Kevin Brown (captain), Arron Molyneux, Tom Derbyshire, Tom Gray, Josh Taberner, George Bridge, Chris King, Josh Caldwell, Oliver Doran, Liam Fowler and Conor Sheehan-Jones.
Man of the Match – Tom Gray. Relishing his move to the middle of defence this was an outstanding and much improved defensive performance from Tom, making this one of the easiest awards of the season to hand out.
The spectators’ award went to Oliver Doran, who as well as working his “socks off” in defence and attack, was eventually rewarded with a try.
I thought long and hard about giving the coaches award to everyone this week as it was obvious that everyone had learnt something following Tuesday’s epic training session on defending the try line – I know it wasn’t fun. However Andy and I eventually decided that the coaches’ award winners would go to three players who demonstrated what had been taught and matched each other in the work they did in defence. It would have been unfair to pick a single winner as all three of them were covering towards the wings and each managed to make fourteen solid tackles - Tom Derbyshire, Kevin Brown and Chris King.
SHEVINGTON SHARKS U9's - 12 CHORLEY PANTHER U9's - 28 - 18th Nov 2007.
A very cold and wet game in which the winner would be the team that held on to the ball the longest. Unfortunately for the Sharks this proved to be the Panthers.
Captained by Man of the Match Tom Darbyshire even the determined runs of Spectators Choice Joshua Taberner were not enough to break away from the Panthers defence and it was only a fast play the ball by George Bridge that allowed Arron Molyneux to side step through the defence and score the Shark's only try of the first half. The Panther led at half time Sharks 4 - Panthers 12.
Driving back at the Panthers defence a more determined Sharks managed to get back into the game after the break momentarily when Oliver Doran took the ball on the first tackle and drove through the Panthers defence to get the ball down. The Panther replied and even the sterling cover tackles from Coaches Award Winner Jack Brogan was not enough to keep the Panthers out. The Sharks never gave up and a flurry of creative passing put the Sharks 20 meters from the Panther's line and Tom Darbyshire managed to scoot around the outside of the Panthers defence to slide over in the corner. Although the Sharks were more determined in the second half the game finished Sharks 12 - Panthers 28.
Credit to both teams for not giving up in the wet, cold conditions. Well done!
Man of the Match Tom Darbyshire, Spectators Choice Joshua Taberner and Coaches Award Jack Brogan. Tries Tom Darbyshire, Arron Molyneux and Oliver Doran.
