This important clash of the teams battling for second place went to the wire in a tense nail-biting finish.
Against the run of play, it was the visitors who were first on the score sheet despite some great passing moves by the Sharks which they could not seem to convert to points today. Latchford added another unconverted try to their tally - to leave Shevington trailing at half-time 0-8.
The second half saw Shevington start stronger and the first Sharks first try came from prop Luke Barrett who barged his way over. Further pressure from the Sharks, who were now on the ascendancy, repeatedly caused the Latchford defence problems. A well-worked set of passes from Shevington eventually found Man of the Match Danny Bayliss, who used his strength to force himself over the try line.
Top Tackler went to the hard-working Tom Kay, with Dan Turner picking up the Spectator’s Award for a solid display. Coaches’ Award was earned by Dan Almond, for his total commitment both in training and on the field today.

Despite the very heavy conditions this turned out to be a great game of rugby league.
After 10 minutes of deadlock the visitors were first on the score sheet eventually breaking through the Sharks defensive line. This however spurred on Shevington as Spectators choice Dan Turner scored the first of his brace of tries following an excellent run from defence by Man of the Match, Luke Barrett. Barrett added the conversion. Once again Shevington had to withstand pressure from Thatto Heath but then executed a set move which resulted in Turner grabbing his second with Danny Binder converting. Thatto continued to attack the Sharks and their efforts were rewarded in a try to leave the half time score at 12 – 10.
Shevington were quickest out of the blocks in the second half forcing Thatto to drop out under the sticks. With possession regained and a neat cross field kick found the ever impressive Barrett who went over to score with Binder again adding the extras. The visitors were not fazed however and despite some excellent defence from the Sharks they went over for a converted try leaving the game in the balance at 18 – 16. SHEVINGTON SHARKS U14's 8 - WEST BOWLING U14's 16 - 13th Jan 2008.
Shevington had certain victory cruelly snatched away from them today in this National Cup tie by a display of “ungentlemanly conduct” from their Yorkshire opponents on the stroke of fulltime, and which the referee chose to ignore. This ultimately was to cost Shevington the match - in which they were the better side for the majority of the game.
West Bowling were first on the score sheet with a dubiously awarded try. This was to be their last touch of the ball until five minutes before the end of the first half - as Shevington applied all the pressure. Despite this pressure however, Shevington were unable to convert their territory to points, leaving the half time score 4-0.
The home side started the stronger in the second half, throwing all they had at Shevington who defended their line well. It was however the Sharks who were next on the score sheet with the try coming from the in-form Man of the Match Luke Barrett who steamrollered his way over the whitewash. On the stroke of full time, Shevington were awarded a penalty for a high tackle which they opted to kick. This would have sealed the match for the Sharks. The display of “ungentlemanly conduct”, encouraged by the West Bowling officials, served its’ purpose in distracting the kicker sufficiently for him to miss the kick. With the full time score at 4-4, extra time was to be played.
First blood in extra time was to be Shevington’s, when a great set of passes found winger Jonathan Bates who scored in the corner. In the second period of extra time, West Bowling scored to equalize, converting the kick to edge them in the lead with minutes of the match remaining. The final try from the Yorkshire team was scored as the final whistle blew. Shevington were devastated to go out of the cup competition in such a cruel way.

Top Tackler Dan Almond was held up over the line for the Sharks, before Burtonwood scored an unconverted try in the corner to leave the half time score at 4-6.
Brilliant attacking runs from Shevington started to cut into the home side defence in the second half and it was not long before Man of the Match Luke Barrett placed the ball under the sticks to allow Shevington a bit of breathing space. Barrett kept the pressure on, scoring soon after with his next powerful try. Winger Danny Bayliss turned the screw by jinxing over the line try to put the Sharks further into the lead. In usual Burtonwood fashion however, they then began to up their game for the last fifteen minutes, scoring twice in quick succession to keep them in with a shout. However, when Spectator’s Award Winner Theo Moorfield bull-dozed through the Burtonwood defensive line, this sealed the victory for Shevington on the stroke of full time.

The deadlock was broken when winger Danny Bayliss received the ball out wide following an excellent set of passes, to score in the corner. A testing cross-field kick from Man of the Match and Spectator’s Award winner Deane Meadows was fumbled by the Latchford defence. The first to react was Jonathan Bates who neatly picked up the loose ball to go over in the corner. Latchford replied by converting a well-worked try. Picking the ball up from the base of the scrum deep inside Latchford’s half; Bayliss ran the full length of the pitch to score in spectacular fashion to leave the half time score 6-14.
